Area of Legal Concentration
Terry’s practice is focused on business litigation and real estate tax reduction. In the area of business litigation, Terry represents business clients in both state and federal courts and handles cases in arbitration and before various administrative agencies. Terry also supervises our real estate tax group. He has been working in the property tax field since he joined the firm more than 20 years ago. He contests real estate tax assessments by filing complaints with the Assessor’s Office, the Board of Review, the State of Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board and in the Circuit Court in the form of specific tax objections. The complaints are filed in Cook County and through the State of Illinois. The properties involved cover the entire spectrum of industrial, commercial and residential real estate, including downtown Chicago office buildings, shopping centers, steel plants and other industrial facilities, landfills, motels, auto dealerships, apartment buildings, housing projects, condominiums, and exempt properties. He has won annual tax reductions and refunds of millions of dollars for some clients.
Terry also prepares petitions for property tax exemptions for qualified institutions like schools, charities and professional associations that provide training for their members. He has successfully appealed such cases to the Illinois Department of Revenue. He has also saved clients millions of dollars in real estate taxes through special tax incentives for property owners who rehabilitate or renew use of real estate.
